Here's a regular wildlife pond we look after which requires a full trim up every year. The bullrushes at the back are partially removed to stop them encroaching further and further and we get right onto the centre island and trim it down. It's usually cold work this time of the year and this day was no exception but it stops all of the waste rotting down into the pond over winter. It also gives everything room to thrive come the spring and prevents excess nutrients becoming a problem like it was when we first started doing this a few years back. As you can see the pond had a major problem with duckweed but we now keep it under control using various methods.
Although there had been some maintenance performed on this pond over the years it needed a full overhaul to get back to a good stage again. We started off by dredging out all of the waste to find the ponds bottom. The customer wanted to have the pond re painted so the next step was to remove all of the plants. The root system was very thick and had to be cut into smaller sections and left to dry for a couple of days ready for removal. Once the pond was completely empty we did some prep work before painting. The electric to the pond isn't present anymore so unfortunately we couldn't get the fountain up and running. The customer is looking into solar pumps for the future. The pond, although now bare looks very clean again and once the paint has cured can be filled back up and planted up again by the customer ready for it's next run.
Here we have a small little feature pond that hadn't been touched in some time. We performed a full reset of this pond, draining all the water and waste away in order to try and eliminate the duck weed. The lions head feature fountain wasn't operational so we also installed a small pressure filter just to the left of the pond which will help circulate the water and keep things fresh so it doesn't go stagnant like before. Everything is running as it should, the electrics are now safe and another happy customer.
It had been sometime since this pond had been thoroughly serviced and cleaned. The filter was no longer keeping the water clear and required a major service as it wasn't functioning at all. The foams had gone rock solid and the UV system was waterlogged and not working. A few new foams and a replacement UV system will get everything running nicely again.
We still kept a good amount of the current water as it's established and will clear now theres a functioning filtration system. A lot of heavy sludge was removed from the bottom of the pond which was partially blocking the pumps and adding to the water clarity issues. We topped up the pond with around 30 percent dechlorinated tap water to finish. It just needs a little time for the filter to bring some clarity to the water.
This is how we install pond underlay so it doesn't move around when installing the liner...
